A million red roses from Vyborg

Representatives of agricultural enterprises of the Vyborg region in Russia have discussed the results of 2018. The meeting was held at the greenhouse complex Agroaliance Sever (previously Severnaya Mechta).

The enterprise is 10 years old, said the head of the greenhouse complex, Mr. Vladimir Volkov. Once this place was a wild field, and now it is a contemporary greenhouse complex with an acreage of 7.5 ha. The enterprise provides employment to 220 people.

“First we built the greenhouses for growing roses, with an acreage of 3 ha. Then another 2 ha were added. We also realized that growing lettuce and greenery is much more efficient in greenhouses than in the open field and have constructed a complex for that purpose”, said Mr. Vladimir Volkov. “Nowadays lettuce is the main product of the enterprise. They bring stable profit every year. Annually we deliver about 12 million heads of lettuce for sale."

Apart from lettuce, the enterprise grows about 4.5 million roses a year. A rose bush lives under greenhouse conditions for six years. After that, its fertility decreases. Originally the flower seeds and the greenhouse complex itself were purchased in the Netherlands. The roof of the greenhouse is constructed in such a way that 70% of water for the flowers is received from the atmosphere.

Last year the enterprise planted tulips successfully for the first time. In the coming year, it is planned to grow up to 5 million pieces of these flowers. Apart from that, Mr. Vladimirov has confessed that they plan on growing champignons, as all the necessary conditions are present.
