Russia: Women's Day tulip mania gets underway again

The first advertisements on flower sales for International Women’s Day, March 8, appeared in December. However, the majority have been announced at the auctions within the past week. At the moment, the amount of such offers has exceeded one hundred.

The prices start from 0.30 Euro per piece. The bigger the batch, the lower the price per piece is. For instance, in a batch of 100 Dutch tulips, a 70 centimeter long one flower would cost 0.39 Euro. In a batch of 10 thousand, one flower would cost 0.34 Euro.

There are offers from the retail sector too, the cost of the same Dutch tulips being 1.17 Euro per flower.

Last year the entrepreneurs of Krasnoyarsk who attempted to engage in flower selling before the big holiday admitted the business being not very profitable; they could barely make ends meet because of extremely high competition.

Usually the sales last three days: on March 7-9. Krasnoyarsk resident Vladimir has shared that he used to sell tulips every year, but now he only helps his friends or watches the chaos from aside.

“A friend of mine purchased 1.5 thousand tulips for retail sale. Within the three days, he only managed to sell a thousand. The wholesale price of a flower is 0.3 Euro and the retail one is 0.78 Euro. On the last day the price drops to 0.5 – 0.65 Euro.” The competition is growing every year, with new entrepreneurs hoping to gain an easy profit in this high season and the profit going down.
