Sneak Peek California Spring Trials 2019

What to expect at the California Spring Trials 2019? At this week-long event held at various locations throughout California from March 23-27, breeders, growers and suppliers will showcase their newest varieties and products. In the coming weeks FloralDaily.com will highlight one product from each participating company in a series of five articles. 

In this edition, we show the top products from Danziger, Hem Genetics, Dümmen Orange, Benary, Suntory, American Takii and Varinova.


Danziger - Petunia AMORE King of Hearts

Hem Genetics - Patio-tomaat Plumbrella
Plumbrella are brand new genetics in patio tomatoes. The plum-shaped fruits of this determinate patio tomato are developing above the leaves and spreads like a blanket over the foliage, giving a striking presentation at point of sale. The plant and leaves are very heat tolerant. Plumbrella has a dwarf and compact plant habit, is growing up to 35 cm/14 in. tall and is suited for growing in 12-16 cm/4-6 in. pots. This variety is available in four attractive colors: red, orange, creamy-yellow, rosy-pink and a mixture. In Germany, Prumbrella received the 2018 Taspo Award. Dümmen Orange - Roller Coaster Hot Pink 
Roller Coaster Hot Pink is a new introduction for 2020 from Dümmen Orange. "It offers an appealing texture of double, wavy-edged blooms. These medium-vigor New Guinea Impatiens are suited to finishing in larger containers for premium positioning, or in packs for landscape use. Benary - BIG Begonia BIG Pink Bronze

Suntory - Surfinia Purple Starshine 
Suntory has brought more star power to petunias with Surfinia Purple Starshine! Bright purple flowers have a white star pattern. Habit is more mounded than classic Surfinia. In 2019, Suntory will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Surfinia petunias, which started Suntory Flowers. American Takii - Zinnia F1 Preciosa 
At American Takii, Zinnia F1 Preciosa will be one of the highlights. It is a new series with more plants that are more compact and more branching while flowers are more double than Zinnia F1 Dreamland. Flowers are 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter and plants are 10 to 12 inches (25.5 to 30.5 cm) in height. Available in light yellow, yellow, pink, rose, scarlet, white and red as well as 2 mixes. Varinova - Midi Cyclamen Merita Deep rose
The Midi Cyclamen Merita is an important highlight at Varino. It is a new cyclamen that is claimed to be very suitable for the US market. The pot size of this cyclamen is 10.5-12 cm/4”, the plant is compact, has large flowers, richly flowering, available in 12 colors of which 3 flamed and 3 shine colors. The new color is Deep Rose. Most locations are open 8 am - 5 pm, but if you are interested in visiting any of the locations, it is recommended (and sometimes required) that you make a reservation. Unlike last year, AmericanHort does not host the registration this year, for a selected number of companies one can register on www.springtrialsregistration.com.

There is no fee to participate, but the trials are not open to the general public (only for businesses and their employees associated with the horticulture industry) and transportation and logistics are the responsibility of the attendee.
