Significantly less freight going through Schiphol compared to 2018

The number of freight movements at the Dutch national airport dropped by 17.3% in January compared to January 2018. Again more cargo was shipped in the holds of passenger flights (+ 6.2%), resulting in a 9.1% total decrease of freight volume. The decrease is mainly in imports from North America and Africa, exports to the Middle East and in both import and export to European countries.

In January of this year, a total of 5 million passengers travelled from, to or via Schiphol, an increase of 1.7% compared to January 2018. The number of passengers who departed or arrived at Schiphol increased by 2.9%. The number of passengers with a transfer remained almost constant with an increase of 0.1%. On average, larger aircraft came to Schiphol (2.1% more seats) with a slightly lower occupancy rate (-0.3%). The number of flight movements remained almost constant (+ 0.2%) compared to January last year.

Royal Schiphol Group also published the annual report for 2018 in mid-February. This shows that the volume of cargo decreased by 2.5% compared to 2017.
