Dutch embassy gives tulip Philly Belle to the city of Philadelphia

The Dutch embassy has offered a new tulip to the city of Philadelphia during the Preview Gala of the large Philadelphia Flower Show on March 10. This is a gesture of recognition of the chosen theme: "Holland: Flowering the World". The tulip comes from the stand of Remarkable Tulips from Lisse.

The embassy conducted a poll on its website, www.NLintheUSA.com, and invited visitors of the site to vote for their favorite name. There were three options: Philly Belle, Philly Love and Pretty Philly. More than half of the votes cast were for Philly Belle.

Consul-General Dolph Hogewoning of the Dutch consulate: "It is fairly logical that people choose Philly Belle, because it embodies both the tulip and the city of Philadelphia. One cannot think of Philadelphia without thinking of the famous Liberty Bell."
