US (CA): Spring is in the air at Sun Valley

Spring is officially here, after a winter with record rains and record snowfall across California.

Air and soil temperatures are warming, longer hours of sun, and plenty of water mean the arrival of what the people at Sun Valley fondly call “The Spring Effect.”

"We grow flowers year-round, and honestly, some days this can be a challenge. As an example, our gorgeous lilies need about 12 hours of light a day to perform at their peak. This means using artificial light for about 4 hours a day in late December at the shortest day of the year.

"In summer, sometimes the heat wants to bring the flowers to bloom too soon, so we work hard to keep the crop cool and covered in shade."

Spring though, is when nature aligns with flower farmers' goals. Their efforts are facilitated by nature, bringing a robust harvest across the crop calendar. Luckily, this is also the time of year consumers are thinking about flowers.
