New roses and tech at Plantec Ecuador open house

March of 2019 marked the introduction for Plantec Ecuador’s new rose collection. In this year’s open house Plantec hosted approximately 300 producers, exporters, and commercializers from all over Ecuador and parts of the USA at their headquarters, located at 2625 meters above sea level, conveniently close to Quito Airport.

"Historically we know our clients need varieties they can rely on, not only on their fields, but also when being shipped abroad. It’s for this very reason that our rigorous selection process includes a flight simulation component in which we test each variety’s potential for transport and resulting vase life", explains Aviram Krell with Plantec.

Guests had an opportunity to explore the new Evaluations Center, which brought to life the process each variety goes through before becoming commercially available.

"Not only did we have exciting products to show off in our commercial and experimental area for our guests, but this year we were also excited to show off our renovated Mother Plant Greenhouse. This facility has been completely converted into a Hydroponic greenhouse using the famous MAPAL system", Aviram continues.

“It has been an absolutely tremendous change, and being able to say without a shadow of a doubt that all of our grafting material is the cleanest grafting material available is a game changer”, Diego Granja Head of Sales, said.

And to maintain the topic of innovation, this year Plantec was finally able to analyze and present the results of their new PRO rootstock using data over the course of over one year in several different farms and varieties. The results showed a general trend of significant increased productivity (in some cases up to 50%), and increased quality of the plant.

"We also had increased world-wide recognition of our iconic varieties such as Mondial and Shimmer by Kordes Roses, Explorer and Brighton by Interplant Roses, White O'Hara by Delbard, and Nexus and Atomic by Grandiflora", Aviram tells us.

"The new 2019 collection has already been very well received, with a full spectrum of colors and shapes, they have preformed spectacularly in vase life tests. These newer arrivals are presented on our updated website, and include some up and comers such as Bentayga (sandy), Priority (Light Pink Blush), and Gisele (Deep Yellow)."

While the new collection included over 20 new additions to the palate offered within  Plantec, the two varieties that garnered the most attention were Xtripes (a striated Deep Red/Hot Pink work of art which appeared as a sport of Explorer), and a new red from Kordes Roses, “Fortune”.

“Fortune has demanded attention ever since we first saw its unique velvet red color, and now with vase life tests lasting over 21 days, Fortune has been the center of attention for many of our growers and their commercializers for the past few days”, Sofia Sanchez, General Manager, said.

"At Plantec its always a pleasure to host our producers and guests from the entire market chain, and we hope that our guests enjoyed sharing this amazing experience with us", Aviram concluded.
