An 11-member Chinese delegation from Yunnan Province called on Osama Taseer, President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on 25 March, 2019 at DCCI.
During the meeting, DCCI President Osama Taseer said China is the largest trading partner of Bangladesh and in 2017-18 the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and China was USD12.401 billion. During the same fiscal Bangladesh imports USD11706 million and exports to China about USD694.97 million. He said that by the year 2021 the bilateral trade volume between these two friendly countries will reach USD18 billion. Osama Taseer said Yunnan Province is one of the largest machineries manufacturers in China. He invited entrepreneurs of this sector to invest in Bangladesh. He also said that Yunnan has its high level expertise in flower production and Bangladesh is also doing well in variety of flower production. Technology transfer and skill development will help Bangladesh to make diversification in this promising sector. Bangladesh’s ‘Look East’ Policy is essentially designed to open up new avenues of cooperation with China and the ASEAN, he mentioned. He also said Electrical & Electronics, Agriculture, Tourism, Flower, Medicine, Connectivity and Maritime can be some of the potential sectors for joint ventures, he mentioned.
Leader of the Chinese delegation and Deputy Director, Foreign Trade Division, Department of Commerce, Yunnan Province Yuan Lin said that in 2018 total export and import volume of Yunnan was USD 30 billion and only USD 4 billion came from machineries export. He said Yunnan is the fourth largest machineries manufacturer Province in China and they are interested to invest in Bangladesh. Moreover coffee, tobacco, rubber and flower are being produced in plenty in Yunnan. He requested Bangladeshi importers to consider Yunnan while importing these products. He said despite Bangladesh and Yunnan geographically are very close, but the bilateral trade volume Yunnan and Bangladesh is not at the expected level. He urged the businessmen of both the region to work for increasing bilateral trade.
DCCI Vice President Imran Ahmed, Directors Alhaj Deen Mohammed, Enamul Haque Patwary, Hossain A Sikder, Engr. Md. Al Amin, Mohammad Bashiruddin, Shams Mahmudand S.M. Zillur Rahman, former Vice Presidents M. Abu Hurairah and Kh. Shahidul Islam were also present on the occasion.
