The National Garden Scheme (NGS) has announced its annual donation to Perennial of £130,000 following another year of open gardens and fundraising for a range of health and social welfare charities. This donation, the largest Perennial receives from a single donor, will allow Perennial to continue providing its range of financial and personal support services for people throughout the industry and their families. Last year alone, Perennial helped people access £4 million in financial assistance.
Speaking about the enduring support of the NGS and its garden owners, Anita Bates, Director of Marketing & Fundraising at Perennial said:
“The NGS has been supporting our work for over 30 years now and this long-term partnership has enabled us to help thousands of people working in and retired from all sectors of the horticulture industry. If you work with plants, trees or grass, Perennial is your charity and through our partnership with the NGS we are able to safeguard our services for people in horticulture for years to come. On behalf of everyone here I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who opens their garden under the NGS each year.”
This year, as Perennial celebrates its 180th anniversary, the NGS donation will also enable the charity to extend the help it offers people before their situation reaches crisis point. Perennial recently launched its online budgeting tool, designed to help people understand and manage their finances before they need emergency support, and further ways to help people keep track of their financial wellbeing are in the pipeline.
Perennial helps people like Richard, who, following emergency surgery, suddenly found he was no longer able to access his garden. Richard had been an estate gardener and luckily his daughter was told about Perennial and got in touch.

Perennial’s own garden at Fullers Mill in Suffolk opens through the NGS on Sunday 19th May and 6th October from 11am-5pm. The gardens of the Six Houses in Barton near Cambridge, which are owned by Perennial as retirement housing, will also open for the NGS as part of the Barton Gardens group on Sunday 2nd June 2pm-5pm.
Details of all open gardens are published in the NGS’s annual guide, ‘Garden Visitor’s Handbook 2019’, which is available to buy now from the Perennial online shop priced £13.99.
