US (NJ): Community college kicks off Earth Week with greenhouse opening

Sussex County Community College will kick off an Earth Week celebration at 9 a.m. Monday, April 22, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new greenhouse on the campus' Connor Green.

The greenhouse is an experimental classroom where students can learn both traditional and innovative growing techniques and includes five different hydroponic systems where kale, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and herbs are grown.

Currently, the Greenhouse Management Class is growing a variety of plants for important insect pollinators to learn more and ultimately educate others on how to increase pollinator habitat. Many of the pollinator plants will be planted on campus when they are ready. The greenhouse provides an excellent space for year-round learning through growing food and plants.

SCCC's vision is to develop a robust agriculture school that will equip students with the tools they need to approach agricultural and horticultural practices, businesses and employment with deliberate consideration for both economics and ecology.
