Peter Seabrook interviews Anna Ball

Getting younger people interested in horticulture

At this year's California Spring Trials, British garden broadcaster Peter Seabrook interviewed Ball Horticultural Company president and CEO Anna Ball.

In the video, Peter and Anna discuss the efforts needed to entice younger people into horticulture careers. In the United States, Anna is a key promoter of the initiative “Seed Your Future,” which targets middle-school students as a key growth opportunity for the next generation of the horticulture workforce and as the new gardener. Peter and Anna also discuss the growing trend of “plant parents” who find solace in their lives surrounded by houseplants and nature.

At 4:17, Peter and Anna take a closer look at a breeding breakthrough while at California Spring Trials: The new Beacon Impatiens by PanAmerican Seed. Peter mentions that the science and technology aspect of tracing Beacon’s resistance back into the genes during the breeding process is another avenue of interest that younger people would find fascinating, and again draw them into the world of horticulture.
