A lot of candidates running for local municipality elections have distributed flowers to constituents which spiked the demand for cut flowers, especially for carnations.
Candidates also took advantage of Women’s Day at the beginning of March to give away flowers and Izmir Chamber of Florists Chairman Kazim Kis noted that all the florists were delighted with these developments.
Kazım Kis: “There was an especially huge boost in carnation sales. According to the information I have received from local auctions, Turkish growers have so far exported 3 million stems of carnations whereas an equal amount is also sold to local market. We have sold around 2 million carnations just during this election period. Our sales have doubled and we didn’t experience any problems with sourcing either. The supply was able to fulfill the rise in demand.
Now sales have leveled off but we expect another dramatic increase on Mother’s Day.”
