NL: A morning at the Keukenhof

Last weekend, we've paid a visit to the Keukenhof in Lisse, the Netherlands. Yearly, this 32 ha area is filled with over 7 million bulbs and visited by more than a million visitors from all over the world. Also this year, it has been busy and particularly during the warm and sunny Easter weekend. People were stuck in traffic for hours and in only four days of the Easter weekend, over 200,000 people visited the park. Last year, the number during these days was only 80,000 people and this probably had to do with the lower temperatures at that time.

Flower Bulb exports from the Netherlands
62 percent of the flower bulbs in the world are grown in the Netherlands. The total bulb cultivation covers an area of 20,000 ha of which half of it is used for the cultivation of tulips, followed by the Lily (4,000 ha), the Narcissus (1,600 ha) and Hyacinth (1,200). The remaining (3,200 ha) is used for other types of bulbs.

With the busy Easter still in our minds, we decided to go early. At 8 am, the park opens its doors and it is still quiet. However, in just a couple of hours, the park was filled with visitors taking pictures of the flowers.

The 2019 Keukenhof motto for this year is “Flower Power”

Opening hours
The Keukenhof is open till May 19, from 8 am to 7:30 pm. Want to enjoy the peace and quiet of Keukenhof? It is advised to visit the park before 10:30 am and after 4 pm, because it is usually less busy then. It also seems to be less busy on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday than on the other days of the week.
