August 29-30, Ellerhoop

Germany: Nursery stock sector to gather at Nurserymachinery/Baumschultechnik

On August 29th and 30th 2019 Ellerhoop, located 25 km north-west of Hamburg in Germany, will host the European trade fair for the nursery stock technology – Nurserymachinery (Baumschultechnik). This exhibition, organized for the industry professionals since 1958 will feature its 12th edition this year. Started as a local event, which for almost 5 decades was held at several nurseries of the Pinneberg region, Baumschultechnik has developed into an important international meeting point for those who want to be updated in terms of the equipment necessary for the production of shrubs, trees, perennials and Christmas trees for the first time. The fair also gives an opportunity to get an overview of what is grown (and how) in the nurseries of Schleswig-Holstein – the land famous for the volume, diversity and quality of the hardy nursery stock production.

German “nursery stock land”
Schleswig-Holstein is the German land with the biggest area of nursery stock production in the country (and one of the biggest in Europe), with 4000 ha of nurseries, owned by about 300 growers. The industry there, which is concentrated mainly in the region of Pinneberg, boasts a long nursery stock tradition (dating back to the 18th century), wide assortment of ornamental shrubs, trees, perennials and well-known, innovative companies, like Kordes Jungpflanzen, Rosen Tantau, W. Kordes’ Söhne, Hachmann Baumschulen, Lorenz von Ehren GmbH – to name just a few. No wonder that the slogan of the 2019 edition of “Baumschultechnik” is: ‘Innovation meets tradition’.

Practical relevance: exhibition, field demonstrations, catalogue
The fair is organized every 5-7 years – often enough to provide visitors with enough technological innovations and developments. “Baumschultechnik” offers not only the wide presentation of the machines and devices but the demonstrations of the equipment as well (a special area for field demonstrations has been already prepared and planted with hardy nursery stock spaced at 50, 100 and 250 cm).

The exhibition – with approximately 300 exhibitors in 2019 – will take place at Horticulture Centre (Gartenbauzentrum) in Ellerhoop, which has been the venue for the fair since 2006. It guarantees free parking and international reception. The main groups of products will comprise: tractors, GPS controlled systems, trimmers, soil care equipment, planting and potting machines, irrigation systems, fertilizing machines, devices for plant protection and plant lifting, digging as well as bundling machines, transport units, equipment for packing, greenhouses, office organization. Among novelties one will be able to find for example: new developments for mechanical weed control, self-steering systems for tractors, use of drones, automatic grading machines for seedlings as well as other robots. For the first time this year Christmas tree growers and suppliers of the machinery for them will get the chance to exhibit too.

Specific for the “Baumschultechnik” trade fair is the detailed catalogue including full descriptions of all exhibits offered. This technical reference book consists of about 300 pages (but is available only in German). In addition, the updated version of it can be followed online: www.baumschultechnik.de

Florum – Days of Schleswig-Holstein’s Nursery stock
Growers from Schleswig-Holstein will present their plants during “Baumschultechnik” too. At the Centre of Horticulture (Gartenbauzentrum) they will also give presentations on the latest knowledge in the nursery stock production.

Besides, from August 29th till September 5th – i.e. for 8 long days – they will have “open days” for expected 6,000-8,000 visitors from all over the world, including Japanese, American and Canadian guests. The event, which will accompany “Baumschultechnik” for the first time is called: Florum – Holsteiner Baumschultage (Days of Schleswig-Holstein’s Nursery stock).

Anniversary
“Baumschultechnik 2019” will also coincide with the celebration of the 200th corporate anniversary of Hermann Meyer KG. This company, with the headquarters in Rellingen (around 10 km south of Ellerhoop), is said to be the number one European supplier of different means of production for the hardy nursery stock industry.
