Javier Mantilla of Muchflowers, on the importance of farm certifications

"Not the product, but the story behind it and the people will bring the grower success"

"Storytelling in business is often regarded as a buzzword, but it's far from it. Stories connect people with other people, businesses, brands, products and their dreams. At Muchflowers we believe in the story of each fellow of our company, we believe that success will only be achieved by the devoted effort and motivation of our people", says Javier Mantilla of Muchflowers.

Javier Mantilla, Juan Jose Albuja and his son Ignacio Albuja at the IFTF 2018 in Vijfhuizen, the Netherlands.

In 2016, three good friends dedicated to the cut flower business in Ecuador in casual conversation agreed that the only way to become more competitive and dynamic in a globalized cut flower business was to join forces and work together under one commercial company. That's when the story of Muchflowers began.

What started as a simple idea has evolved into a powerful model that four years later has consolidated Muchflowers as one of the fastest growing cut flower groups in Ecuador. Today Muchflowers owns 6 farms located in different regions throughout the Andes territory of Ecuador, amounting to a total of 88 hectares in production and 1100 people under payroll.

Muchflowers believes that not the quality of flowers, technology, logistics and commercial advantages will bring the grower success, but the story behind the people and the product. "Farm certifications guarantee that we are doing good practices regarding law, environment and our people. Therefore, our farms are Flor Ecuador, Rain Forest Alliance and Fair Trade certified."

"As growers, we need the market to understand the importance of these certifications, and when their buying decision comes they look for farms that produce not only top quality Ecuadorian cut flowers, but farms that produce under ethical, social and environmental practices." According to Mantilla, flowers need to tell a story. "If consumers start buying on this basis, more farms will compromise with these types of certifications that overall help us all to take care of our planet and our people."

"Muchflowers is promoting Fair Trade Roses to demonstrate how our workers benefit from it, and we have also thrown a campaign under the hashtag #muchpeople to show all our customers and followers what we do with our people. We invite them to follow us and see our video of our Fair Trade Rose Farm named Roma Verde."
