"The Maculata hasn’t been produced in 6 cm before"

Following the introduction of the Begonia Maculata, which they produce from seed, Danish company By Growers now introduce a 6 cm variant. “They are rather trendy and also new due to the fact that the Maculata hasn’t been produced in 6 cm before”, says marketing manager Colleen Soine.

Jesper Madsen at IPM Essen 2019 presenting the 6 cm begonias.

“Everything that has been trendy has been really large. Now the market is going to have sizes that are a bit more refined. It can be quite difficult to introduce a smaller version of a plant, so timing is important. We have managed to maintain the right color and quality within the 6 cm.” But growers have high expectations for this dotted begonia. Just as the 12 cm, the 6 cm is a product that is strategically launched. “It is an exclusive product and as mentioned timing is crucial for when we launch. We haven’t made a hype of it yet, but we know there is a lot of interest."

Right now we are testing a lot, so far, we have seen in the greenhouse that the plant is quite durable and very beautiful. We plan to increase production in August. In the beginning of next year it will be in full production.” They will sold by direct sales.

At the local plant market in March 2019, the maculata was a big eye-catcher.

Trendy
Meanwhile, sales are going well for the 12 cm Begonia Maculata. “You see it more often and it is becoming trendier. We have seen the green, tropical leaves for a while, now it is moving more to spots and dots, the more irregular plants. That is why we think this Begonia will be a good product. The wine red color in the back will stand out and – as the nick name of this plant is ‘silver spot’ – as the light reflects off the leaf at the right angle, the dots look like water drops.

Begonia family
The Begonia Maculata is running alongside some other introductions, among which the Begonia Venosa Lambi – a retro plant that is remarkable for its woolly leaf texture. This one is available in 6 and 12 cm as well. ”And with growers we are constantly working on renovating and cultivating our plants, to the utmost quality and appearance, and that’s why our begonia series is a beautiful way to showcase the differentiation and capabilities we have.”
