"This year's Mother's Day was very helpful since many businesses slowed down due to Ramadan"

Satisfying Mother's Day sales for Turkish growers

On Sunday May 12, Mother's Day was also celebrated in Turkey and the demand was high. At the auction in Yalova, sales even doubled. Roses are among the most preferred varieties. Also, for many flower growers, this year's Mother's Day was very helpful since many floral businesses slowed down a bit due to Ramadan. Besides the local demand, there was also an international demand for Turkish flowers; over 45 million stems were exported to 39 countries for Mother's Day. Then, carnations are the top export product, followed by gerbera.

Below a list of articles published on the Mother's Day results.

Sales in Yalova auction doubled due to Mother's Day

Due to the high demand on Mother’s Day, it was extremely busy for growers in Yalova, one of the main cut flower and ornamental plant centers in Turkey.

Located next to Istanbul in northwestern region of Turkey, products from Yalova are sent to Istanbul and other major domestic markets.
Florists and wholesalers all spent a lot of time and money in the SS Flora auction in Yalova. SS Flora is a cut flower growers cooperative with 6,000 members which has 18 auction places around Turkey.
The sales at Yalova auction doubled due to Mother’s Day which delighted the growers.

Cooperative official Onur Ates: “A lot of growers align their harvest with Mother’s Day to fulfill the increasing demand on the market that’s why the transaction volumes have gone up significantly.

Rose continues to be the most preferred variety followed by ornamental pot plants and phalaenopsis. We believe about 5 million stems of roses are sold in Turkey during Mother’s Day, on average we sold 50,000 roses per day in the week leading to the Mother’s Day.”

Mother’s Day orders were quite high for Izmir growers both in local and export markets

Speaking to the press, Izmir Flower Growers Association Chairman Kazim Kus: “Izmir had the busiest time of the season due to Mother’s Day as orders were plenty for this special day. Aegean region is responsible for almost 65 % of Turkey’s flower and plant production and we have sold a lot of products both to local markets and to important export markets in Europe.

As usual, our growers started preparing for Mother’s Day weeks in advance as along with Valentine’s Day, these are the most important 2 days in a season for our industry. This year Mother’s Day was especially helpful since our businesses had slowed down due to Ramadan quite a bit. Because of Ramadan, there are very few weddings and openings so this special day came to our rescue at the right time.

There are many alternatives as a gift to mothers but most of our people prefer flowers and plants. Our growers have no trouble in fulfilling orders. We have a specific auction in Izmir for export products where export buyers come and buy high-quality products for their orders from abroad. Our products are sold to Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and Netherlands. Export companies prefer flowers at an earlier cut stage and they usually purchase carnations. There is not a high demand on pot plants from Turkey in export market so the exports are mainly cut flowers.

For local market, the consumers want either roses or pot plants such as phalaenopsis, viola, kalanchoe, bromelia and guzmania. There is also some demand for anthurium. Additionally a lot people want to buy terrariums for their mothers as these products are increasing in popularity so we have sold quite a bit of them as well. “

Over 45 million stems exported to 39 countries for Mother's Day

Turkish Ornamental Plants Exporters Association Board Member Harun Yeter informed the press about the export figures in floriculture industry which saw a significant spike recently due to Mother’s Day.

Harun Yeter: “Our growers have exported 45 million stems of cut flowers to 39 countries in the weeks leading to Mother’s Day. The Netherlands is the top export destination for our products followed by United Kingdom, Germany, Romania and Ukraine. Our estimation is that our growers have sold 7 million USD worth of flowers due to Mother’s Day.

Our growers have also sold around 15 million stems in the domestic market and the figures in domestic market have been rising consistently throughout the years. Even though there are no official numbers, we estimate that local market grows around 20 to 30 % annually. We observe that our people are not only buying flowers and plants on special days but they slowly started to purchase floricultural products for their own personal use.

Carnations continue to be the top export product followed by gerbera. There are about 13 varieties of cut flowers grown by Turkish growers. Antalya continues to be the center of production though there are also a lot of growers in Izmir and Yalova. We believe that this industry is creating jobs for nearly 30,000 people.”
