In Grou, Friesland, they are working hard at the moment to build a bigger shed to start producing larger foils this fall. Annemieke Aal and Martijn Riewald of Gauris, a company that was founded last year, are building a shed of twenty by forty meters. Martijn: "We both have a background in water storage and horticulture, and want to introduce more continuity into our production process".
Upscaling
Both entrepreneurs have been active as foil producers who have been making customized foils for consumer swimming pools and ponds, coverings for waste heaps, for roof constructions, and for water storage in Grou for years. Annemieke: "Our webshop Tuin en Vijver Direct, has been running for more than ten years, was originally created with the waste processing of the surplus foil for the production of silos and basins. We are certainly not unfamiliar with the matter, and we have earned our spurs, also with regard to purchases and sales."
At this moment, production is already taking place in a temporary location. The first projects in the horticulture have been finished. Martijn: "Things start happening on their own, thanks to our 'old' network."
On location welding if necessary
The maximum size of a foil, is partly determined by the size of the shed. But also the final location is important. Silos with foil and tank are delivered as a complete package, but just as with large foils, everything has to be manageable and transportable. Martijn: "You should not only look at if something is possible in the factory, but certainly also if it can be done on location. That is why we regularly weld foils on location."
The foils and silos, maximum diameter of 32 meter, are supplied with an extensive manual. Annemiek: "And we always offer first time support on location."
Establishing a foothold in South America
Nationally, it is often the grower that comes to Gauris, internationally it is often a dealer network of installers and greenhouse builders. The new company is mainly focused on the international market. "Our primary focus is on South America, where we are trying to establish a dealer network of installers who form our connection to the grower. Everything they hear, we hear, and in this way, we can anticipate quickly."
Martijn and Annemieke also see a growing demand for water storage in North America. "Since the legalization of cannabis in Canada and certain America states, a lot of new greenhouses are built, or existing greenhouses are transformed. Often, they will need new basins or silos."
Gauris joins the first project of an installer. "We train them, and the first project we build together. In this way, you can deliver a high level of quality and issue certificates."
