Dutch flowers and plants export 4% higher

The export figures up to and including May 2019 give a positive picture of sales. Both the pot plant and cut flower exports have, in terms of turnover, increased (by 4.5 and 3.6% respectively). Up to and including May, cumulative sales were almost 4% higher compared to 2018. Export sales were spectacularly higher in April (almost + 15% in total), mainly thanks to cut flower exports (source: Floridata). Mother's Day 2019 has been an attractive event for flower and plant sales. In many countries, Mother's Day falls in May, so the trading results in that month are usually good. The relatively cool weather has also had a positive effect on pricing across the board. However, for almost all products the supply in May 2019 was lower than that of 2018 (-4.5%). The pricing of houseplants was generally positive. Despite the extra auction days, no more garden plants were sold in April and May than in 2018. The trade in garden plants is largely determined by the trade in bedding plants in late spring. It has been disappointing in April and May.
