New Zealand: Beautiful blooms at tulip exporter's open day

Rain showers didn't deter thousands of people from taking the ultimate southern selfie in fields of tulips on Monday.

Southland tulip exporter Triflor NZ opened its gates so that people could visit the company's blooms, and thousands of people showed up, operations manager Rudi Verplancke said.

Verplancke said the company was growing 100ha of tulips in Southland, but they would soon be de-headed, as the company exports around 55 million bulbs each year.

About 80 per cent of the bulbs would go to the United States and the rest to European countries including Holland, Norway, Finland and Russia, Verplancke said.
