China: Town glows with new vitality thanks to the floral industry

"We plant gerbera, and pick it once every two days. We sold 72,000 branches yesterday," the grower Yu Guoxiang said while inspecting the quality of the flowers in the greenhouse. "Tomorrow we will continue to pick, there are more than 70,000 branches ready to sell. All the purchases by the Huamu Industry Service Alliance has relieved the worries of our flower farmers."

Sales and market demand are matching, which is driving professional production: standardized planting, refrigeration, transportation. This has allowed for the rise of the largest fresh-cut flower production base in middle of Jiangsu province, with flower planting area of 86.67 hectares and an average of daily 250,000 branches of fresh-cut flowers shipped to all parts of the country. This budding industry has attracted more than 100 farmers to work, and this year brought 60,000 RMB to each household in the area.

“Last year, as one of the 16 approved townships in Jiangsu Province, our town successfully applied for the demonstration project of the central agricultural industry strong town. We tried the first step in building a service platform, setting up a floral industry service alliance, and implementing the technical training for order-based planting and online direct sales, in order to let the flower farmers have no more worries about sales," Xu Wei, the party secretary of the town, said. "The town's flower and bonsai area has not only expanded to 1733.33 hectares, but the quality has been greatly improved. By the end of October, the total income of the flower and bonsai exceeded 3 billion RMB, and farmers per capita benefited 27,000 RMB."

The unique bonsai and the large trees in the landscape make the Xingang Village of Motou Town a green ocean. The largest Phalaenopsis production base in Nantong is located here, with the warm indoor climate, and female employees were transplanting 150 thousand Phalaenopsis. “This batch of Phalaenopsis will enter into the market during the Spring Festival, and the wholesale price is more than 25 RMB per plant.” Wang Pingfang, general manager of Huai'an Huangda Flower Co., Ltd. said, “The 5,000 m2 glass greenhouse rented by the town government has modern systems, such as  insulation, cooling pad, and wet curtain, automatic seedbed and other equipment, which boost our bigger and stronger flower industry, and sales will exceed 7 million RMB next year."

In the Hongxuan nursery field in Xingang Village, which is located in Rugao City, the pineapple flower imported from the Netherlands was planted here. Mei Ruidong, a 32-year-old boy who graduated from Yangzhou University with a major in horticultural engineering, is now the owner of this nursery. He said, "I used my unique skill to build Nantong's largest pineapple breeding base, relying on temperature-regulated growth, this batch of pineapples is targeted at the New Year's Day and Spring Festival markets. I earned more than 1 million RMB last year, this year's income will not be lower than this number."

Every day from 8:00 to 10:00 pm, a live webcast will be held. Consumers from all over the country can sit at home and check the flowers and bonsai of Nantong Yatu Technology Co., Ltd. In other words, look at the flowers and place an order according to the “view”. After the completion of the Big Data Center operation this year, the merchants of the Huaxia Flower Market in Motou Town have played live sales on the basis of offline sales. "In the first nine months of this year, online transactions exceeded 500 million yuan," Qiu Dexiang, chairman of Huaxia Flower Co., Ltd. said.

There are both “high appearance-added value” and “high economy-added value”. As the only town in the first batch of agricultural demonstration in Jiangsu Province, Motou Town vigorously promotes the development of multi-integration of flowers and trees, leisure agriculture and rural tourism. The seedling industry is transforming into the development with colorization, preciousness, and efficiency. The bonsai industry is moving towards standardization, miniaturization, externalization, and industrialization.
