China: Siyang, Jiangsu uses "cloning technology" to cultivate high-end flower

The winter season was supposed to be the season with only withered flowers and trees, but in Siyang, Jiangsu, it is still a colorful world.

"We use plant genetic breeding and cloning technology with independent intellectual property rights so that one leaf that meets the requirements can breed 1 million anthuriums, which is internationally leading." On December 18th, the journalist came to the greenhouse of Jiangsu Xinjingjie Agricultural Development Co., Ltd in Siyang County, Jiangsu Province, and saw a large scale of anthurium plants with almost the same characteristics, such as the height and the size.

"Just cut 2mm from the leaf and put it into the culture bottle, you can cultivate a plant with the same characteristics as the original plant. Let it grow roots, leaves, and flowers and then bear fruit," said Xu Hougang, general manager of the company. The green plants do not need to be sown, just need to cut a leaf, and can harvest 10,000 "children". In the research and development center of the company, thousands of glass bottles are neatly placed on the shelves, and the leaf tissue cells in the bottles have grown into fresh plant sprouts.

Compared with conventional methods of cultivating flowers, using "cloning technology" to cultivate flowers has many advantages. "The high-end flowers cultivated by 'cloning technology' can retain the original excellent characteristics of the plant, for example, they can have the characteristics of corrosion resistance, longer flowering time, etc., and there is no problem of degradation and variation." In the smart greenhouse, Zheng Ping, the chairman of the company, who is also a Ph.D. from Nanjing Forestry University said that anthurium, phalaenopsis, bamboo jade, and other precious flowers have a low success rate of breeding, but the use of "clone technology" breeding can solve the problem.

"Famous and precious flowers such as anthurium introduced from the Netherlands can also be detoxified during tissue culture breeding process, making them healthy virus-free plants, and the cost per plant is as low as 0.3 RMB. In addition, from tissue culture to sale, it takes only one year, and it can quickly form a large scale. "Zheng Ping said.

Flower cloning technology from the laboratory to the market requires both financial support and technical support. Therefore, the company cooperates with Nanjing Forestry University to carry out technical cooperation. In addition to building the largest tissue culture center in China, it also builds a 100,000 m2 high-end intelligent control greenhouse and introduces a Dutch fully automatic basin-loading machine and an air energy heating production line to produce more than 40 high-end best-selling greenhouse pot flowers such as rose, anthurium, pineapple, etc. Among them, the quality and scale of the tissue culture technology of anthurium rank in the top three in China.

Relying on advanced tissue culture technology, Siyang County quickly opened the surrounding flower market. Siyang County has built a comprehensive flower market, an e-commerce flower center and a flower shopping street to attract surrounding villagers to participate in flower sales, online shopping, wholesale and consignment sales.

"We have collected a collection of 2,000 rose-planting resources. We are also constructing a rose museum and a rose theme park. We will build a flower town with an area of more than 300 hectares based on the Tissue Culture Center and construct a flower seedling production and consumption base with an annual output value of 500 million RMB and cover a range of 200 km, and strive to make the flower industry into a local characteristic industry and a pillar industry, which further can fill the gap of high-end flower industry in northern Jiangsu." Peng Tiejun, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Lai’an Street, Siyang County, said.
