United Selections, a flower breeder in Kenya’s Nakuru county, inaugurated a 110 kWp solar system at their open days event. The event’s theme was “breeding a colourful future sustainably”, a topic that is high on United Selections’ agenda and encouraged their move to solar energy. The project was implemented by ecoligo, a German-based company, together with EPC partners Yingli Namene Solar.
Rasmus Hansen, ecoligo’s Managing Director in Kenya, said: “We always value the opportunity to showcase our projects. Potential customers can learn more about using solar energy and imagine how their own project might look, while our clients get the chance to demonstrate their move to green energy. It’s a key topic in Kenya’s horticulture industry at the moment and so it was great to talk with industry leaders about how we can support them in becoming more sustainable.”
Kenyan flower growers, suppliers and other stakeholders attended the event, a yearly celebration at United Selections where attendees can browse new flower varieties. The flower breeder has always placed value on environmental-friendly methods of growing, however this year’s addition of renewable energy has brought the business to the next level in terms of sustainability.
Managing Director Jelle Posthumus was delighted to see reactions from his customers to the system. “We’re very happy to have the chance to unveil our solar system to the attendees of our open days. United Selections is committed to innovation and environmental protection and powering our farm with solar energy fits well with these values. It was also a good opportunity for ecoligo and Yingli Namene to share knowledge and answer questions about the project and we hope to see other flower farms adopting solar energy as a result.”
This solar project was coordinated by ecoligo, which is also the project owner and operator, and was financed by crowdinvestors on the platform www.ecoligo.investments. As the engineering and turnkey construction company, Yingli Namene Solar was responsible for the installation and takes care of the ongoing operation and maintenance of the system.

The 110 kWp photovoltaic project will provide United Selections with clean energy during daytime, lowering energy costs for the business and saving up to 113 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
