"We believe that healthy growing without pests and diseases, in a clean way without harmful substances, is possible," according to Thomas Verburg. He is director of the Dutch company that, with reference to their many years of experience in the production of silver-stabilized hydrogen peroxide, distributes genuine certified silver 10 gram plates to growers at HortiContact in Gorinchem.

"Secure in the safe we have a box full of silver plates ready for every grower who visits our stand and makes an appointment with us for a visit to their nursery," says Thomas. Companies that also believe that healthy and cleaner cultivation is possible, we like to help with the prevention of diseases (bacteria, fungi and viruses) and pests (russet mites, spider mites, thrips and caterpillars)."
Keeping spider mites and russet mites away
To keep out the latter group of insects, Cindro recommends stimulating the natural resistance of the crop. “Crops can produce biological substances so that insects find the crop unattractive. In (current) small-scale tests at around twenty companies, you see that spider mite, russet mite and thrips are not present. The effect is already visible within a few days, dead insects are no longer seen in the crop, as is the case with chemical crop protection agents.”
According to Thomas, the new knowledge is a solution especially for russet mite in tomato. “Combating this pest with approved crop protection products is very difficult and virtually impossible with biological control. But by thinking differently with small adjustments in the cultivation and the regular spraying schedule, the grower now has an additional option to keep russet mites out of the greenhouse.”
