Armada destroys mother plants of multiflora variety Thompson

Recently it become clear that Armada produces a multiflora variety, which falls under the scope of a plant variety right protection owned by Gediflora.

Gediflora noted and indicated in 2019 that Armada commercializes the multiflora variety Thompson which was very similar to the leading Gediflora multiflora variety Mefisto.

Both chrysanthemum breeders decided in mutual consultation to carry out a DNA comparison study on the distinguishability of these 2 varieties.

This research was conducted by NAKTuinbouw - Variety Tracer and under the coordination and supervision of Royalty Administration International.

This research proved that both varieties are not distinguishable on the part of the DNA which was investigated.

The Gediflora multiflora variety Mefisto is protected by the European Union Plant Breeders Rights. Based on the demonstrated similarity it is concluded that Armada infringed Gediflora's Plant Breeders Rights of Mefisto.

Armada confirms that, without any form of deliberate intent, there has been an internal mixing of multiflora varieties, which has led to this situation.

Armada deplores the situation that has arisen and has immediately decided to withdraw the Thompson multiflora variety completely from the market and to destroy all the mother plants of this variety, also among the growers licensed by Armada.

Armada agreed to disburse all the collected Thompson royalties to Gediflora and also an additional penalty set by Gediflora. All costs associated with the AFLP identification technique are borne by Armada.

Case is settled and closed in good cooperation.
