US (FL): Suntory Flowers on the road at Costa Farms

Last week, Costa Farms hosted its Season Premier event in its trial gardens at Costa Color near Homestead, FL. This officially kicks off the Southern garden trials and is an opportunity to see 2021 introductions before the California Spring Trials.

by Delilah Onofrey and Lorentina McKoy

Each bed features 10 varieties, six plants each. In the Suntory Flowers bed, you can see how the new Surdiva Purple scaevola compares to the rest of the series, along with new Soiree Kawaii catharanthus, which have always been top performers here. They love it in Florida and will look fantastic through the summer. This also is our second year showing the stunning brateantha Granvia Gold, which debuted here a year ago but was a late introduction for 2020. The varieties will stay in the bed until September, a true test for Miami heat! Our varieties were also featured in hanging baskets, combination planters and retail demonstration areas for the Season Premier event.

Soiree Kawaii Blueberry Kiss
Our most exciting introduction for 2021 is the first blue in the Soiree Kawaii catharanthus series, Blueberry Kiss! Purplish blue flowers have a dark eye or kiss. Be among the first to trial this season. Liners are available from Sun-Fire Nurseries.

Surdiva Purple
If you are a fan of Surdiva scaevolas, you will love our new Purple! This is the first purple in our series, which includes the deep Blue Violet, Fashion Pink, Sky Blue and White improved. Excellent to mix and match in combinations.

Two hearts beat as one
We were thrilled to see how nicely the new Surfinia Purple Heart blends with the lighter Heartbeat Improved in a hanging basket. Each flower features a pattern of five hearts on a white flower. Pattern expression may vary with temperature, fertilizer level and PGR use.

Pairing Soiree and Sun Parasol
We're working on mixing and matching more heat lovers. In this planter, Sun Parasol Garden White is surrounded by the new Soiree Kawaii Coral Reef. The white eye mirrors the white Mandevillas, which were still in bud but will look stunning when flowers are fully open. A great summer container!
