One cannot miss the greenhouse complex in stanitsa Elizavetinskaya as the flower aroma reaches one on the highway. From here, the flowers are delivered to Krasnodar, Anapa Novorossiysk, Sochi and as far as Chechnya, Nadym, Samara and Lipetsk region.
From the outside, the greenhouses growing multiple flower varieties over the acreage of a one ha looks like a regular enterprise.
The director of the complex, Ms. Elena Zyuzina opens the door to the greenhouse, where the air is pleasantly warm and filled with the flower aroma. It seems that several seasons go hand in hand together here: in one part of the greenhouse, the seeds have just sprung up, in another one the seedlings have been lined up and in the third one, they have bloomed.
Dragon Wing begonias, ampelous petunias, anyone can find a flower to his or her liking. An impressive view for a person who only saw tomato and cucumber greenhouses before. The greenhouse associates have just finished planting new seedling in separate pots. The enterprise cannot do without the skilled flower growers as Krasnodar solely orders up to 400 thousand units of planting material in spring and in autumn.
Violas, prime roses, buttercups, cyclamens and geraniums are ready for sale. “The city authorities usually order sun-loving petunias, marigolds, verbenas, salvias, coleus and catharanthuses from us”, mentions Ms. Elena Zyuzina. “These annuals are not demanding. However, tropical petunias also feel at home in our climate. The shade-loving plants are ordered more rarely, these are mainly balsamines and several varieties of coleus.”
Ms. Elena Zyuzina’s startup began with digging flowerbeds and working from dusk until dawn. Fortunately, she could get some advice from family members, as she is a third generation agronomist.
Before she engaged in the flower business, Ms. Elena Zyuzina, Ph.D., Biology was a professor at the local agricultural university. Over 12 years together with her husband, also an agronomist, they have been involved in the flower industry. Currently they have more customers than produce but in the beginning, it was a lot more risky. Flowers are perishable products, they cannot be processed. However, the risk has paid off; the enterprise has become more and more successful year after year and has become a serious competitor to the flower importing companies.
Visitors can hear music on the premises. “It is both for the plants and the associates”, notes Ms. Elena Zyuzina. “Everything should be in harmony. Music influences flower growth. We do not have a special playlist, just make sure that the songs are positive. But it’s not only the music that influences the flowers but also proper care with the account of contemporary tendencies.”
“Flowers are like babies, they need not only to be taken care of but also be loved, talked to”, mentions the manager of the greenhouse complex, Mr. Alexander Ermolenko. “We start seeding in the beginning of January, and then the seedlings are lined up and planted in separate pots. We take care of them for 1.5-2 months and here they are, ready to be taken away by the clients.”
“I cannot say I have any favorites”, mentions Ms. Elena Zyuzina. I do not have favorite flowers or favorite associates. Everything and everyone should be treated with an open heart. If you do not plunge into work, are not optimistic, the result will be doubtful. A person, who does not love flowers, would not be able to work here. A plot, where they work gritting their teeth, will be out of plan and will look very different from others. However, I do give certain preference to tulips”.
