Several sources reported that a survey took place at the start of the coronavirus crisis, asking operators of Europe's biggest wholesale market in Rungis (France) whether or not they wanted to close the market one day a week in this exceptional situation. From this exhaustive survey carried out by the S’FL union among fruit and vegetable operators, the majority of them opted for a closure on Monday.
Wholesalers can continue to receive merchandise and ship orders and pre-orders to customers who will pick them up at the dock, but it will not be possible to display produce on Monday April 6 and Easter Monday.
This decision was jointly taken by the S’FL, the CTC and Semmaris in order to protect employees, customers and follow the line adopted by the President of the Republic in these times of crisis. Depending on the evolution of the situation, the decision could be reviewed in the coming weeks.
Other sources stated that in Rungis one of the food halls will be transformed into a morgue. For the next couple of days, the bodies of people who have died due to coronavirus will be held there temporarily.
