UK growers seek alternative ways to control vine weevil as Exemptor is phased out

With the recent revocation of the licence for Thiacloprid, last dates for ordering Exemptor – the systemic season long vine weevil control, have been announced.

The final date for sales of Exemptor to UK growers for stand-alone product, or to place orders for incorporation into growing media, is 3 August, 2020. For orders placed before this date, the final delivery date for incorporation in growing media is 6 January 2021 with the final use-up date set at 3 February 2021.

In the Republic of Ireland, the final sales date for stand-alone product, or to place an order for incorporation into growing media, is 3 November 2020. The final delivery date for incorporation in growing media is 6 January 2021, with the final use-up date set at 3 February 2021.

“It is important for growers to know that after 3 August 2020 in the UK, and 3 November 2020 in the Republic of Ireland, it will not be possible to place an order for Exemptor product or to include it in an order for growing media mix,” says Martin Donnelly sales development manager at ICL.

ICL webinars tackle future of Vine Weevil control
With the loss of Exemptor (Thiacloprid) in 2021, many growers are wondering how to effectively protect their crops from this prevalent and potentially devastating pest. To help, ICL is hosting three informative pre-recorded Vine Weevil webinars focusing on the products available and their effective application throughout the growing season.

ICL has been working to provide answers to help growers protect their crops, employing different types of biological products. These three Vine Weevil Webinars explain how to work these into an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme delivering optimum results.

Titled the ‘Future of Vine Weevil Control’, ICL’s Technical Manager Andrew Wilson and Sales Development Manager Martin Donnelly will present three informative webinars covering important aspects for growing in the future.

Webinar 1 Pitcher - the New Biorational

  • Date Monday, 4 May 2020
  • Times 11:00 | 15:45 | 19:30

A new biorational pesticide for the suppression of Black Vine Weevil eggs and early stage instar larvae, Pitcher GR is approved through an Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use (EAMU) in containerised ornamental plants, both protected and outdoors.

Webinar 2 Seeka – the nematode range from ICL

  • Date Wednesday, 6 May 2020
  • Times 11:00 | 15:45 | 19:30

Seeka is a range of beneficial nematodes, powered by BASF technology, which helps ornamental growers reduce the risk of damage from pests which feed on their plants. Targeting specific pests such as vine weevil, ICL’s Seeka looks to supplement our portfolio helping to provide growers with a one-stop-shop for their vine weevil plant protection needs.

Webinar 3 IPM Planning and application

  • Date Tuesday, 12 May 2020
  • Times 11:00 | 15:45 | 19:30

Andrew Wilson and Martin Donnelly combine the new ICL products in to a coherent IPM programme discussing the important factors to ensure these controls are optimised when applied.

Each webinar is pre-recorded and therefore there is no live Q&A session. However, a follow up email will be sent to enable growers to make product enquires to their local Technical Area Sales Manager, as well as links to product brochures and relevant web pages.
