Heliotropium arborescens "Laguna Blue": South Tyrolean Plant of the Year

For the 12th time in a row, a jury of experts of the Südtiroler Bauernbund has selected a plant for the coming gardening season from among numerous new plants. This year's winner is the "Heliotropium arborescens "Laguna Blue" from the Italian young plant company Lazzeri from Merano.

"With its dense growth and dark purple flowers, the plant of the year 2020 is not only a visual asset for every balcony: with its sweet vanilla scent it also flatters the senses. The godfather of today's Plant of the Year is the singer and songwriter Michael Aster. He presents the "Plant of the Year" - how can it be different in Corona times - from his home garden via video message"

"The cooperation between South Tyrolean young plant nurseries and retail nurseries is a special concern for us in this campaign", says Valtl Raffeiner, chairman of the South Tyrolean Gardeners' Association: "For this reason, a jury of experts visits all the young plant nurseries in our country and selects a special specimen from the abundance of novelties, which is then chosen as the "Plant of the Year". The novelty is available exclusively in those South Tyrolean nurseries that are members of the South Tyrolean Gardeners' Association. Own labels identify the "Plant of the Year"."

Andrea Lazzeri, from the young plant nursery Lazzeri in Merano, explains the advantages of his novelty. "The "Laguna Blue" convinces as an uncomplicated continuous flowering plant until autumn. With its deep blue flower umbels, which are bedded on densely grown small leaves, it announces the summer. As the Latin name Heliotrop suggests, the flowers always turn towards the position of the sun, which is why it needs a very sunny spot. The strong scent of the Laguna is reminiscent of vanilla, which is why it is often called the vanilla flower and is therefore also a favourite of the bees."

The "Laguna Blue" can be used as a single plant, as well as in combination with other plants in tubs, hanging baskets and balcony boxes.

"Matching the dynamic and elegant plant, this time singer Michael Aster takes over the sponsorship for the new "Laguna Blue": He loves flowers and plants and for him this plant novelty this year is the possibility to bring the sea home after all."

For the last 12 years, the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle have provided the ideal showcase for the presentation of the "Plant of the Year". This year, the plant could not be presented on site, but the "Laguna Blue" will decorate the visitors' bridge in the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle throughout the season and enchant the visitors' hearts with its sea feeling and vanilla scent.
