Mother's Day in China: "Good demand across the board"

The floral industry is picking up in China for several weeks now and Mother's Day (May 10) boosted the sales. It seems it has been a holiday with pleasing sales across the board. "Normally, Carnations are the main flower gift for Mother's Day, but this year lilies and other items also sold well", says Tim Scalonge of Hasfarm FleuraMetz Flowers Ltd, a joint venture of Hasfarm and Fleurametz that was established last year with the aim to become a complete B2B partner for Chinese florists and wholesalers.

Pleasing Mother's Day
Mother's Day is usually a good day for the ornamental industry and in many countries, where they celebrated it on 10 May this year, also this year, sales seem to have been satisfactory. Also in China, Mother's Day falls on May 10 and after the COVID-19 lockdown, flower sales are increasing sharply. Before the run-up to this year's Mother's Day, prices were a bit lower compared to last year, but during the run-up, prices were similar. Also volumes.

Next holiday: 520
A relatively new holiday in China is 520, short for May 20. "It is invented by Jack Ma of Alibaba to boost the online sales. 5-2-0 in Chinese is Wu Er Ling which more or less sounds like Wo Ai Ni, which means 'I love you'."

As it is about love, it is an opportunity for the flower sales to benefit from this holiday. Last year, however, was quite disappointing for flower sales, but this year seems to be stronger than last year."

And, according to Scalongne, the rose is the most important item for this year as it is related to love.
