Webinar on Australian Nursery Industry Business Benchmarking Tool

Find out how the Nursery Industry Business Benchmarking Tool can help you assess how well your business is doing through a free interactive webinar on Wednesday 24 June 2020.

by Gabrielle Stannus

Developed as part of the Nursery Industry Statistics 2017-18 (NY17008) project, the Nursery Industry Business Benchmarking Tool enables production businesses to benchmark core aspects of the business against the extensive sample of surveys conducted in 2016, 2018 and 2019.

This tool is designed to enable your nursery production business to benchmark core aspects of your business against the results collected from the survey. It allows comparisons between the type of plants you sold, and by market segment. The tool also provides the opportunity to compare your business' sales, employees and wages to national figures by sales turnover range, as well as enabling you to see how your views of the nursery industry compare to your peers.

Three years running!
Now in its third iteration, the project has gathered three years’ of statistically robust data. “The benchmarking tool has been constantly refined and improved and the data has accumulated to the point where it has become an information asset that has tangible value,” says Rebecca Moriarty, an economist from ACIL Allen Consulting, the company responsible for developing the tool with the support of Greenlife Industry Australia and Down to Earth Research.

“The tool and the survey are intrinsically designed to be representative of the industry, so they will capture information outside of your immediate network. It gives you a bird's eye view in a way that has not been feasible in this industry before with this level of confidence,” says Rebecca, adding that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has recently adopted the survey questionnaire as a part of its official data collection and reporting.

Key findings
Information captured during the most recent survey shows that the industry experienced strong growth during the 2018-19 financial year. It grew at about 2% over the whole period of surveying to about $2.4 billion, excluding sales to wholesalers with about a 1.6% growth in the last year. “The volume of plants sold has trended up as well to over 1.3 billion or over 2 billion when you include the wholesale to wholesale figures,” says Rebecca. When assessing business sentiment, Rebecca says most businesses were feeling positive about the future, although it was the smaller businesses (<$2 million turnover) that were being more assertive with their expansion plans.

Webinar – 24 June 2020
Together with colleague and project lead Jan Paul van Moort, Rebecca will be conducting an interactive webinar to update nursery production businesses on the project’s most recent findings. Rebecca and Jan Paul will also provide a practical demonstration of the interactive Excel-based tool and explain how you can use it to benefit your business and grow understanding of your industry. The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session.
