Turkey Growers Association President: “Coronavirus spiked the interest in ornamental plants”

Turkey Growers Association President Ahmet Dundar spoke about the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the industry and on consumer spending habits.

Ahmet Dundar: “At the beginning of the outbreak, consumers focused on purchasing food and hygiene products. They have cut down their recreational spending which also impacted the sales of cut flowers and ornamental plants.

However, since mid-April, we have started to observe an increasing demand for ornamental plants. The demand has increased nearly by 50%. Since people spent more time at their homes due to the outbreak, they have started purchasing plants for their homes, gardens, and balconies. The ornamental plant prices remained relatively the same in this period as well despite the increasing demand which also boosted the sales. Additionally, with the borders now open, our growers are able to continue their exports as usual.”
