The second lockdown announced in France the week before the opening of the Trials in Fréjus did not dissuade some of Morel's Italian and French customers from visiting the trials on place, because it's essential for their purchase decision. All sanitary measures respected, it is in a calm and warm atmosphere with an available team that they were able to discover directly the company's 14 novelties as well as the pre-introductions and experimental from their research.
The trials in Frejus, a real lab of research
Coming to the trials at Fréjus is having the opportunity to see in preview all the hybrids in experimentation. Indeed, varietal trials are first and foremost the experimental greenhouse of research which will evaluate some of Morel's hybrids tested for the first time in the fall. These hybrids are thus compared to commercial control batches and to novelties under the same growing conditions.
This year, approximately 350 different varieties were presented in the trial, including about 100 experimental research hybrids. Thanks to 70 years of breeding in the South, the resistance to heat, the plants habit very tolerant to Botrytis, the quality of flower and the long lasting flowering, are always essential criteria.
Before being promoted new products, experimental hybrids go through different stages before the rigorous and knowledgeable eye of the research and technical-commercial teams. Crossing the qualities of the hybrid with its place in the range or the needs of the market, a multitude of parameters are evaluated before going to the next stage. The selected hybrids will then be grown and evaluated the following year in different growers in different climates. After this quality test, the selected crossings begin their commercial introduction.
The new varieties of the year
The highlight this year, the new Midi+ range: located between the Tianis and Latinia ranges is recommended in 10.5 to 15 cm pots, Midi+ consists of 10 pure colors and 1 mix. Midi+ has the advantage of being a super homogeneous range between colors. It is very strongly recommended for outdoors, flower boxes, landscaping, and bedding.
Minis flowers: with Metis Fantasia Artic, OUTstanding Cyclamen, as for itself, differs from other Fantasia by its wide white border on its petal, visible from afar.
The addition of a new red in the Smartiz range: a bright colour, it is more compact than the current one and easy to grow.
Lilibelle, a double novelty: the genetic combination of 2 characters, Fantasia and Victoria on the same flower, giving an appearance both "couture" and very elegant to the bouquet of flowers.
The 2021-22 future novelties
Improvements in Halios with a Decora (Silverleaf) red with a rounder and larger port, and 100% silvery foliage, Curly Deep magenta, an intense color and the introduction of Halios Scarlet Red for winter.
Also the flowering variety Very Special Falbala is improved with a more homogeneous evolution in plant habit and flower shape, well hemmed and bell-shaped fringed (50% of each type). Indiaka will be available in a mix of 4 colors with a flashy contrast and a very synchronized flowering.
Future highlights in Mini: a white-eyed Victoria with a remarkable scent and a new blend of edging in very intense colors.
To come, the pre-intro in process of production
In Latinia, the release of a new range of early flowers, very fringed, has provoked the emulation of visitors this year with its 6 homogeneous colors with "rokoko" crispy flowers. Halios Fantasia Magenta and Violet renew with 100% larger Fantasia flowers.
Other new surprises in Mini Cyclamen will come very soon: flamed, crenellated, wavy fantasy, surprising colors, because originality is above all part of Morel's DNA. The 2021 Trials are going to be sparkling, they promise.
The trials in Frejus are also an occasion to test some of the varieties in outdoor conditions.
About 30 varieties are tested in outdoor trials this year in extreme conditions since they are directly exposed to wind, rain or even in full sun without protection, with large temperature amplitudes. The best will be awarded the OUTstanding Cyclamen label. This selection of top varieties guarantees a sustainable flowering in balcony, garden, solid. 60 catalog references have received the OUTstanding label.

One year after the construction of the new test greenhouse, the very qualitative cultivation in this greenhouse allowed Morel to make beautiful images of the novelties mentioned above, in order to prepare photo selections for customers.
