Dutch grower's closed water supply was already innovative 40 years ago

On 5 January 1981, a Dutch grower close off his water supply. He had found traces of a toxic disinfectant in his tap water. This was the subject of the Dutch Broadcasting Agency's (NOS) very first 'Jeugdjournaal', a news program focused on youngsters specifically. Now, 40 years later, people looked back on that broadcast.

Horticulture played a leading role in that broadcast. The presenter explained that the toxic disinfectant horticulturists used to clean their greenhouses had seeped through plastic pipes into the water supply. It also ended in the grower's greenhouse water supply. According to farmers, other types of disinfectants were too expensive.

This water issue affected children, at whom the program was aimed. They had to drink bottled water for a while. So, just after their Christmas holidays, they told their story.

You can rewatch the broadcast on YouTube.
