Decor Breeding presents its varieties in new video

Cyclamen varieties selected for outdoor gardening in Mediterranean climate zone

Israeli cyclamen breeder Decor Breeding recently released a new video in where they present their new 20251 Mediterranean Cyclamen varieties. At their greenhouse in Kfar Ruth, Amir Drori, co-founder presents the varieties, which are selected for outdoor gardening in Mediterranean climate zone.

According to Drori these varieties, in the Mediterranean climate, require good resistance to high temperature, dryness and high radiation. "This resistance is beneficial for the growing of the plants, and for the plants outdoor, in the garden."

Temperature, dryness and high radiation resistance
The benefit of resistance to Mediterranean climate conditions is important to have better resistance to fungal disease, such as botrytis, coletotrichum, phosarium and more, he explains. "Our varieties are less susceptible to these fungal diseases. Till now, they did not apply any treatment against fungal diseases. "

Rapid growth and easy to flower in high temperature
On top of that, they also select the varieties with a rapid growth rate and varieties that flower easy in high temperatures. "This year, we had temperatures in Israel in September so plant growth was more vegetative and less reproductive. Big plants, a lot of leaves and a significant delay in flowering time. This caused, more fungal diseases and a loss of income."

Mortality rate is the biggest expense in growing cyclamen
The biggest expense in growing cyclamen is the mortality rate of the plants, he explains. "So, better resistance to Mediterranean climate conditions reduces the mortality rate, so improves the profitability."

They have started their selection about 15 years ago and for the past 3 years, they have not made any more selections for more resistant plant varieties. "This because our variety population has relatively good resistance."
