Daffodil growers in Karaburun, Turkey fear of high waste and low prices this season

Karaburun as the center of the daffodil flower production in Turkey, is having a troubled season. While the traditional Daffodil Festival, which is held every year, could not be held this year due to the pandemic, prices remained below expectations due to the increase in daffodil production compared to the previous years and the weather temperature being above seasonal normals.

Reminding that they hosted more than 100,000 visitors at the Daffodil Festival held on January 26, 2020, Karaburun Mayor Ilkay Girgin Erdogan: “While our festival hosted tens of thousands of guests from Izmir and all over our country, our producers had the opportunity to sell almost all of their flowers. Unfortunately, this year we couldn't organize our festival."

Noting that they distributed 120,000 daffodil bulbs to 60 producers last year with the support of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Mayor Erdogan stated that after the distribution, which attracted great interest, the producers planted and harvested more than the previous years. Noting that the daffodils have bloomed earlier than expected with the weather temperature above seasonal norms this year, Erdogan pointed out that the producers are in a difficult situation with the decrease in sales and the decline in prices.
