Toine Overgaag, owner of Westerlay Orchids, originally comes from 's Gravenzande, the Netherlands, where his grandfather cultivated tomatoes. In 1978, his father emigrated to Carpinteria in the USA with his wife and four young children. Joop, Toine's father, largely built his first greenhouse by himself and started the company Westerlay Roses, named after the flower auction in Westerlee. Since 2009, Toine has overseen the company, which has since doubled in size, operates on 7.5 hectares, and produces more than 3.2 million orchids annually.
