Turkey: Cut rose production 2020 down by 4.6%

Flower production and exports in Turkey are advancing rapidly where flower production and exports continue in summer and winter in the greenhouses in the cities of the Mediterranean Region. Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI), announced 489 million stems of roses are grown in Turkey in the last 5 years in a total of 200 hectares. 

Cut rose production last year decreased by 4.6% compared to the previous year and fell from 98 million to 93 million stems. The said production was 97 million in 2018, 108 million in 2017, and 92 million in 2016. Last year, the most exports in cut rose were made to Turkmenistan with 239,000 USD followed by Iraq with 108,000 USD. The total cut rose exports in 2020 totaled 525,000 USD.

Export figures for cut roses were recorded as 460,000 USD in 2019, 489,000 in 2018, 457,000 in 2017 and 538,000 in 2016. A total of 2.2 million USD worth of exports were made in the last 5 years.

On the other hand, 15 million USD worth of imports has been made in the last 5 years. Last year's imports for cut roses reached 2.2 million USD. Last year, the country with the most imports was the Netherlands with 1.8 million USD, followed by Kenya with 203,000 USD. 

Ornamental Plant Producers Association (SUSBIR) Chairman Ahmet Dundar: "Carnations and gerbera are the cut flowers most produced in Turkey. The share of rose production in cut flowers is around 6%."
