In the run-up to International Women's Day, the price of fresh-cut flowers in Kunming Dounan Flower Market reached a new high. Among them, carnations rose the most, with a maximum of more than 60 RMB per bunch.
On March 2, in the carnation trading area of Dounan Flower Market, Mr. Wang, a florist, was busy sorting and packaging the carnations that had just been turned over. Mr. Wang said: "The price of flowers has been soaring in the past few days. A usual bundle of 20 carnations now is sold for more than 10 RMB, the most expensive series named "pink diamond" can be sold for about 60 RMB, and ordinary carnations are also sold for about 40 RMB. "
The reporter learned from the fresh-cut flower price chart published on the Kunming International Flower Auction and Trading Center website that after the Chinese New Year and since the market opened on February 14, the market price of fresh-cut flowers began to rebound all the way up. From February 23, the market price began to soar sharply, on February 28, the fresh cut flower price index reached a high of 727.67.
"When the price of flowers rises, the income of the flower growers also rises. A bunch of 300 carnations can make hundreds of RMB for the flower grower," Dounan florist Mr. Wang Guanfu said.
Mrs. Li Qian, an auctioneer at Dounan Flower Electronic Trading Center said that the current auction situation at Dounan Flower Electronic Trading Center reached the highest point around February 28. Take the series of pink carnations as an example. Due to the approach of International Women’s Day, the price has changed from 1-2 RMB per branch, which is about 20-40 RMB per bundle. Up to now, the price has risen to 3-4 RMB per branch, each bundle is around 60 - 80 RMB. The A and B grades of Rose Carola have risen from 1-2 RMB per branch to 4-5 RMB per branch, and the single bundle price has exceeded 100 RMB.
Why does the price of fresh-cut flowers soar? Mr. Zhao Yongneng, general manager of the Huayibao online auction platform, introduced, according to the data analysis and market research of the Huayibao platform, the rebound of flower prices is mainly due to the following reasons. One reason is that the Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, and International Women’s Day happen to be the peak period of flower demand throughout the year. At least 40% of the flowers in all producing areas were prepared for the period. However, due to the impact of the epidemic in 2020, flower growers’ planting is relatively conservative and the overall supply is insufficient. As a result, the capacity and output of fresh-cut flowers cannot fully meet the recent demand. Another is that due to the increase in vegetable prices in the earlier period, some growers have transferred their land for vegetable planting, which has led to a reduction in the total area of flower cultivation.
Mr. Zhao analyzed that from the perspective of market demand, the demand for fresh-cut flowers is normal and reasonable compared to previous years. As the flower preparation period for International Women’s Day ends, the price of fresh-cut flowers will gradually fall back to the normal market price.
