This has been the 17th year since the inception of the annual Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS) in 2005. Each and every year, this event attracted over 200,000 visitors domestically and from overseas, as well as creating huge business opportunities for orchid growers. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, TIOS was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021, causing certain hardship in marketing and shipping orchids abroad. The primary functions of TIOS are to provide an effective trading platform to trade and market orchid internationally and for producers all over the world to gather and exchange ideas and experiences. However, the global travel restriction, quarantine requirements, and social distancing make it extremely difficult for potential buyers and producers to gather and discuss business in person. To turn challenges into opportunities, the 2021 TIOS has been transformed to take place virtually to allow those who cannot physically attend this event to be able to conveniently conduct businesses online.

Although the in-person 2021 TIOS was cancelled, orchid production and trading must continue to move forward. "To help the orchid producers, we have established the “2021 Taiwan Orchid Business Show” that includes the “2021 Taiwan International Orchid Expo, Forum, and Symposium”, “Taiwan Commercial Orchid Varieties Virtual and On-site Display”, and “Monthly Orchid Judging”", the organization says. They had 11 speakers from six countries to speak via pre-recorded videos at the Forum/Symposium on March 8. The themes were “The prospective of the global orchid industry in the post-pandemic era” and “How interesting the orchids are! – Creating a happy living with orchids”. There were over 200 people attending the Forum/Symposium in-person.
There will be over 300 orchid varieties from various growers on display. These orchids will be filmed in a 3-D fashion to establish a virtual trading platform for growers and buyers to conduct business online. The in-person monthly orchid judging will have over 100 judges participating.
