This year, Senmatic A/S will separate its sensor business and its horticulture business to improve reactivity to new trends in the two very different markets, says CEO Mads Nychel. The horticulture unit, previously known as DGT, returns to its roots and changes its name to DGT by Senmatic.
For more than a decade the Senmatic name has comprised both a sensor business, developing industrial sensors, and a horticulture business, developing control systems for, e.g., commercial greenhouses. But soon the two businesses will divide and continue to operate under two names.
"We have decided to divide to enable both units to grow optimally in each of their industries. The two units operate in very different markets and with different customers, products, and needs. We see this division as a great opportunity to clearly mark two individually strong identities, which can continue to be adaptable, enterprising, and flexible – and thereby drive further growth," says Mads Nychel, CEO at Senmatic A/S.
He explains that particularly the horticultural unit experiences several new market trends and tendencies, which are changing the typical production methods of plants and foodstuffs, creating an increasing demand for adaptability from suppliers as Senmatic.
"The way we produce plants and food is changing drastically. Vertical farming, growing in closed containers, or even underground with no natural sunlight gains more and more ground. These changes happen as urbanization increases and as countries which have not traditionally produced food are starting to investigate being part self-sufficient with the help from technologies as ours. That is also why we have already developed LED grow lights designed for vertical farming. These are examples of tendencies we expect to advance on faster by having independent strategies for the specific unit."
New name rooted in the past
With the division, customers in the horticultural unit must also get used to a new name. The horticulture unit, previously known as DGT, returns to its roots and changes its name to DGT by Senmatic. "A name that especially resonates among customers abroad", says Mads.
"Prior to the merger with Senmatic in 2004, the horticultural unit was known as DGT, and that is the name most frequently known among customers abroad. Merging the DGT name and the Senmatic name puts us in a strong position."
The sensor unit will continue under the name Senmatic.
Senmatic A/S will still act as shared administration and management, and the two divisions maintain a shared address and a shared registration in the Danish Central Business Register (CVR).
