The Greenovation Award 2021 is for the best sustainable product or concept introduction in the floriculture industry in 2021. An international platform awaits for the nominees and winners, where their sustainable product or concept will be presented.
Sustainable production and products are becoming the norm: international consumers increasingly expect a sustainable product. Producers and traders are aware of the importance of this. Royal FloraHolland is stimulating sustainable developments in the chain, which is why it will be presenting the 'Greenovation Award' during the Trade Fair Aalsmeer.
Suppliers with sustainably produced products or concepts can now sign up for the 'Greenovation Award 2021'. A professional jury will judge the entries and determine which product or concept will be nominated for the Greenovation Award 2021. The nominations will be presented in Royal FloraHolland House during the Trade Fair Aalsmeer, where the award ceremony will also take place.
Nominated companies will receive extra exposure in the run-up to the fair through Royal FloraHolland's media. In news items, the trade audience will be called upon to vote for their favourite nominated product or concept. All nominated companies will be visible online then. The winner will be determined 50% by the professional jury and 50% by the online votes of the trade audience.
Who will succeed Kwekerij Barendse Freesia?
From sustainable packaging for flower food and plants in fully biodegradable pots to efficient collection and recycling of plastic waste and sustainable irrigation with solar energy. Just a few of last year's nominees. The ultimate winner was Kwekerij Barendse Freesia for their double-white FreGanzia, which are cultivated in a revolutionary new way.
CEO Steven van Schilfgaarde presented the Greenovation Award 2020 to the company from 's-Gravenzande in December 2020. The company makes optimal use of floor space with a three-tier cultivation system in a fully conditioned climate cell. The 850 solar panels provide electricity for the LED lighting and, thanks to the closed cultivation system, pesticides are unnecessary. Barendse also reuses the drain water and the climate cell is almost emissions-free.
From the jury report: "FreGanzia is cultivated in an innovative cultivation system with almost zero emissions. It is a very promising total concept, that takes into account almost all the components of the footprint (energy, water, crop protection products, use of space). These types of innovation will decide the future for the industry and this complete concept can function as an example and source of inspiration not only for the industry and fellow growers but also for breeders, for example."
