Phalaenopsis prices went up by 100% in the last year in Turkey

Phalaenopsis is a tropical plant and in addition to Turkey, it grows in countries such as the Netherlands, Italy, and Singapore.

The main reason for the limited production throughout Turkey is seen as the high production costs. For this reason, most florists import phalaenopsis from abroad.

The increase in the dollar and euro exchange rates caused the prices of phalaenopsis coming from abroad to be expensive. The current selling price of the phalaenopsis, which was sold for 11.5 USD last year, is in the 23 USD range.

Despite this, phalaenopsis are among the most preferred flowers by consumers. Sercan Banas, a florist in Eskisehir, explained the reasons why phalaenopsis are expensive.

Talking about the negative effects of supermarkets on their business, Banas said, “The prices of phalaenopsis have doubled. Prices are expensive as we mostly import from abroad. This is caused by the dollar and euro exchange rates.

We have local phalaenopsis grown in Yalova. But the phalaenopsis market changes very often. The entry of supermarkets into sales also affects our industry negatively. When the price of the local phalaenopsis drops, they sell local phalaenopsis in the supermarkets and the prices go down. Then we have to reduce the price of the imported phalaenopsis we have, and our profit margin drops a lot,”

Although the phalaenopsis is sold wholesale in Turkey's largest importers, the selling price of the seed is  17 USD. In order for us to sell this product, of course, we need to put our profit margin on it. Of the 20 phalaenopsis we buy wholesale, 10 of them are already dying. We are not satisfied with the increase in prices. We're having trouble putting phalaenopsis on the shelf right now. Despite the prices, consumers still prefer phalaenopsis more.”
