Turkey: Samsun municipality uses the heat from the waste management facility to grow flowers in its greenhouse

The electricity generated from the garbage in the Solid Waste area of Samsun Metropolitan Municipality is used to heat the greenhouse where flowers are grown.

An environmentally-friendly greenhouse was established on 0.3 hectares and flower cultivation is carried out by heating the greenhouse completely with electricity produced with waste gas.

Metropolitan Mayor Mustafa Demir stated that they know how valuable energy is, so they work to ensure that energy is not wasted at any stage.

Stating that they have created the first greenhouse of Turkey in which flowers are grown with heat from the garbage, Mayor Demir said, "In the greenhouse with a capacity of approximately 3 million flowers, 120 thousand flower seedlings were grown as a trial in the first place. It will be a great project in terms of the environment, at the point of saving and reducing emissions for the entire region. The flowers will be used to decorate the parks and the green areas all around the city."

Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department Ali Tulumen: "6 types of flower seedlings were grown in the first production for trial purposes, and the greenhouse is built on an area of 3,000 square meters. We utilized energy from a source that would normally be disposed of and used in greenhouse cultivation. We will use this heat to decorate our beautiful city, Samsun. This will also provide great savings in terms of our budget. As Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, we have added a new one to our environmental activities."
