Selman Transporten turns 75

Selman Transporten in Bemmel celebrates its 75th anniversary. The specialist in conditioned road transport of flowers and plants is celebrating this fact this month with the publication of its own magazine. Director Arno Driessen says that he is proud of reaching this milestone but emphasises that he is mainly concerned with the present and the future.

In the past 75 years, Selman has grown from a one-man company to a flourishing and growing transport company. The origins of the company are in Huissen, where founder Thé Selman started transporting agricultural products in 1946. From 1971, the company started to specialize in the conditioned transport of ornamental plant products. With this specialism, ensuring that flowers and plants arrive at the right destination, at the right time, in the right condition and quality, Selman has focused entirely on the Benelux and Germany since 1998.

Major role in the introduction of CC container in the Netherlands and Germany
One of the highlights in Selman's history is the major role it played in the introduction of the CC Container in the Netherlands and Germany. These so-called Danish trolleys have been the standard load carrier in floriculture transport for decades. For the rental, storage, and management of CC containers, Selman founded sister company Sema Containing in 1982. This enables the company to fully relieve its customers of their CC-container worries.

Several heated halls and a cold store for storage and transshipment
Sema Containing is housed in the same modern premises as Selman Transporten, in the Pannenhuis industrial estate between Bemmel and Huissen. Selman has several heated halls and a refrigerated area for the storage and transshipment of flowers and plants at its disposal. "We are located directly on the A15 motorway", says director Arno Driessen, who has been in charge of the company since 1995, "and as soon as the planned connection of this motorway with the A12 is realized, we will have even better connections with Germany from this location."

Digital consignment note with a direct link to packaging administration
In the magazine, which Selman is publishing to mark its 75th anniversary, Driessen says that you can only achieve an anniversary like this if you keep up with the times and respond to new developments. His company does this by investing in further digitalization, among other things. Driessen: "For example, together with our ICT partners we are currently developing a digital consignment note that is directly linked to the packaging administration. This is an innovative project that is unique in the sector and will enable us to further optimize the registration process of the Danish trolleys, for example."

Good marriage
Selman's jubilee magazine is published in a print run of 2,000 copies and is distributed among customers, business contacts, and chain partners. Customers, suppliers, ICT partners, personnel, and the management have a say in the publication. One of these customers is Twenthe Plant in Hengelo, one of the largest trading companies for garden plants in Europe. About the cooperation with Selman, managing director Erik Wegdam says among other things: "I see our partnership as a good marriage. Trust is the basis of it. In the more than twenty years that we have been working together, Selman has proven to be an extremely reliable partner that takes excellent care of our supply logistics."

Anniversary
"The fact that we have been in existence for 75 years is of course due to the trust of our highly valued customers," Driessen finally underlines. "I would like to thank them warmly for that. We would also never have achieved this anniversary without the tireless efforts of our wonderful staff. Together with our staff, we will soon celebrate 75 years of Selman in an appropriate but modest way. Of course, we will fully observe the rules that apply because of COVID. After that, we will confidently face the future and go on until we're 100!"
