China: Honghe Kaiyuan flower industry benefits farmers

From corn and vegetables to flower planting, the unit income increased from a few hundred yuan to tens of thousands yuan, and from old houses to small western-style houses. In these years, the "flower-like" life of the villagers in Kaiyuan, Honghe, Yunnan Province has been improving

Recently, local villager Zhang Haibei is taking care of his own chrysanthemum greenhouse of more than 6,500 square meters. Seeing chrysanthemums flourishing and growing well, he was very happy. After a while, these chrysanthemums can be harvested and sold, and the estimated income is 200,000 RMB. He said: "In the past, vegetable prices fluctuated greatly, and the income was around 8,000 RMB to 10,000 RMB. Now, when planting flowers, the net income of one hectare of land is more than 300,000 RMB." He used to grow peppers, eggplants and tomatoes. With the establishment of the Kaiyuan National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park, the flower industry has gradually entered the local rural villages. At the end of 2019, he tried to plant flowers, and his income last year alone was 110,000 RMB. "When the price is good, the long-stem chrysanthemum sells for more than 2 RMB, the pompon mum is sold for more than 3 RMB, and the yellow chrysanthemum is 1.7 to 1.8 RMB." At that time, part of the flowers was sold to customers introduced by the park, and part of the flowers was used for online transactions with sellers in Dounan and other places, and the sales channels were smooth.

From a traditional grower to a professional flower grower, Zhang Haibei put in a lot of effort. In terms of flower seedling selection, planting and management, he participated in the training of enterprises in the park while constantly exploring in practice and summing up planting experience. "Flower planting focuses on prevention, and small problems should be solved in time, such as lack of water or fertilizer. Flower planting requires more sophisticated requirements. It is necessary to check the growth frequently and take more care and observation to plant good flowers." Because of the good benefits of flowers, he continued to expand the planting area. Today, he has become a large flower grower locally and has also driven more than 100 farmers to plant flowers.

Driven by the flower industry, many villagers have become professional flower farmers, and some have become "industrial workers" who accompany flowers. Li Xingfeng is a local resident and now a worker in the Kaiyuan National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park. Since the land in the family has been transferred to the Park, she has entered the enterprise to work and has mastered the techniques of pruning flowers and packaging potted plants. Speaking of now, her face was filled with a happy smile. What makes Li Xingfeng happy is not only the increase in income but also the changes brought to life by working in the park. "In the past, I used to go out to work early and back late. I didn’t have a sense of time. It was very hard. After I went to work in the park, I have 8 hours of work a day and 4 days of rest a month. The regularity of life is easier than when I did farm work before.”

Like Li Xingfeng, there are more than 130 local residents who now work in the Park every day. Planting flowers, growing flowers, and selling flowers, the "flower-like" life makes people's lives more beautiful and more “fragrant” than flowers.
