Large facility of boat orchids built in Yunnan, China

Potted Cymbidium orchids, commonly known as boat orchids, are one of the main flowers sold each year during the Spring Festival in China. In recent years, with the continuous development of domestic potted and fresh-cut Cymbidium, Cymbidium products have had more opportunities to enter the market of individual consumers.

What many people don’t know, is that one of the world’s largest production bases of Cymbidium is right in Luquan Yi and Miao Autonomous County, in South West China.

In 2011, the Luquan County Government attracted investments built a high-quality Cymbidium production facility. The project is located in the core area of Luquan. The plan is to build 78 standard thin-film automated solar greenhouses covering an area of 420,000 square meters and a total construction area of 330,000 square meters. The large-scale production of high-quality potted Cymbidium flowers will then be planted. After completion, the annual output of Cymbidium can be 500,000 pots.

The project will be carried out in three phases. 53 greenhouses of 232,000 square meters have been built and put into use, and 50,000 cubic meters of rainwater and residual water collection pools have also been built. Each greenhouse has a 30 cubic meter reservoir and micro-sprinkler irrigation. At present, the base has become the world's largest production base of Cymbidium, achieving an annual output of 400,000 pots of high-quality Cymbidium. The project won honorary titles such as "Yunnan Science and Technology Demonstration Park", and the Cymbidium potted flower was named "Yunnan Famous Brand Product".
