Yunnan, China: Roses capture heart of consumers

In recent years, many new fresh-cut and potted roses on the Yunnan market have captured the hearts of consumers. Most of these new rose varieties come from Yuxi De Ruiter Flower Co., Ltd.

Yuxi De Ruiter is a wholly-owned subsidiary of De Ruiter in the Netherlands. It was established in June 2012 and introduces new varieties of cut roses and potted roses for adaptive cultivation and testing every year. After testing is successful, the seedlings will be sent to flower enterprises and farmers in the cooperatives to carry out large-scale planting and sales. At present, 60% of the fresh-cut rose varieties in the Yunnan market are from De Ruiter, as are 70% of the potted rose varieties in the national market.

Du Xiujuan, general manager of the company, said that every year, the company will introduce more than 3,000 new varieties of roses for localized planting. After three years of plant testing and two years of market testing, more than 10 of the more than 3,000 varieties have passed the assessments for planting, processing, and sales.

Up to now, the company has launched 108 new varieties of roses, with an annual transaction volume of 200 million branches. The company has an annual output of 10 million cut roses, 600,000 pots of potted roses, and 5 million cut flower seedlings, with an output value of 20 million RMB.
