India: "Planting high density plants to get more income from same area"

To address the problems of the farming community, Director Horticulture Jammu Ram Savak conducted a whirlwind tour of District Kishtwar. During the tour, he inaugurated a Mega Awareness Camp at Dachhan, a far-flung area of the District in the presence of Chief Horticulture Officer, Mushtaq Wani, DLSMS Ramban, Pardeep Gupta, Tehsildar Kishtwar, PRI Members, and other officers and officials of the department. Over more than 100 farmers, including women, participated in the camp.

Addressing a large gathering of farmers, the Director Horticulture Jammu briefed the farmers about the various centrally sponsored schemes of the department and urged them to collaborate with the horticulture department on various topics such as water harvesting tanks, drip irrigation, protected cultivation, and strawberry plantation, tools, and implements.

He also emphasized planting high-density plants in their fields so as to get more income from the same area in order to double their income. He said that the district has a great potential for horticulture, which must be tapped and appealed to the PRI and field functionaries to work in tandem for doubling the farmer's income with a special focus on area expansion, the establishment of solar dryers, and processing units.

The farmers also put forward their various demands and sought the availability of plant protection chemicals in their area. The director vehemently assured them and also instructed the CHO Kishtwar to sort out the issue immediately.
